MANHATTAN - Today, Dan Quart released the following statement:

“Today I’m proud to be living in a state that has legalized recreational cannabis. This conversation cannot be untangled from a larger conversation about justice and fairness. Just last month, New York legalized recreational cannabis the right way: by centering communities of color most harmed by draconian criminalization. For decades, the majority of people arrested and incarcerated on cannabis charges were not the Manhattanites I represent on the Upper East Side, but Black and brown New Yorkers in neighborhoods like Washington Heights where I grew up, Harlem, and Inwood.

“A lot of work to build a fairer and safer system remains. As District Attorney I’ll be ready on day one to continue that fight. I look forward to continuing the work for a more just and fair city, alongside all the community leaders and organizations that advocated tirelessly to legalize cannabis last month."
